In the Studio~The Materials an Artist Chooses

Today in the studio, as I worked I wondered if people ever asked, “What are the differences between creating a picture using cloth vs paints?

Artists work using a variety of different materials~for example, a potter molds smooth clay, a sculpture chisels cool stone or textured wood, and a painter brushes on flowing paints. And, many times it is a material’s qualities that determine what type of art, or “medium”, an artist chooses to work with.

As a textile artist, I am drawn to cloth and threads…the textures as you touch it…the softness of the fabrics…

And its warmth as it is smoothed with an iron!

The background of “Field of Flowers in Toledo” is done and the “paints” for the flowers are being prepared. I’ve enjoyed my time in the studio today as I’ve quietly worked with beautifully colored and textured cloth.

Though, I also have my Garden Hat ready, and have spent time imagining planting our flower beds very soon!!   🙂
