Summer’s Renewal

Summer seems to have taken on a time schedule all its own! It has taken me out of my routine, required me to focus on other things, and ultimately helps give me a different perspective. All of this serves as a renewal…

Today I find my way back to the studio, ready to tackle tasks, begin a new design, and reach toward a major goal for 2012.

Interested in contemporary art quilts? The SAQA’s (Studio Art Quilt Association) Benefit Auction will be held in September!!  The artist’s donations for 2012 can now be seen on-line HERE! (see under “News & Events“)  This is a wonderful collection of the variety of unique styles, techniques, and creativity used by artists working in this medium! This event is for those interested in collecting art, at the same time contributing to promote the art quilt medium.

Does Summer take you out of your routine? If you are an artist, how does it impact your artwork?

Summer Daze?

As Summer arrived, many other events that required my attention did also. Though, this week finds me back in the studio with new goals for the rest of the season. Like everyone, I struggle at times to balance work and family, and am sometimes more successful than others.

But, Summer is spent gathering creative inspirations–new sights, sounds, smells, touch sensations, tastes, and experiences.

What summer activities feed your creative soul and impact your future artistic work?

So far I have been inspired by…

  • planting flowers and garden vegetables…

  • picking wonderful ripe, red strawberries…

  • traveling to other places…

  • spending time with distant family…

  • having impromptu picnics…

  • listening to an informal outdoor music concert

  • sitting in the warm, bright sunshine…

  • eating juicy red watermelon and sweet yellow corn

  • and going barefoot whenever possible!

I will continue these and other summer activities as long as possible…

My regular schedule just doesn’t seem to work on warm, inspirational summer days

or perhaps it is more accurate to say,

I’m just in a summer daze?

As the Earth Turns…

Earth Day was first held when I was a high school student in 1970. I remember well the photos of the earth taken from the moon for the first time. A new perspective of the world in which we lived! The image allowed us to see the beauty and vastness of the blue oceans, the snowy white clouds floating around parts of the globe, and how interrelated the nations of the earth really are…

I created this piece when studying human-environmental systems. Its message is that even with the differences between people, such as gender, ethnicity, and culture, there are also needs we all hold in common–such as respect, safety, opportunities, and good food and water.

Many years have passed but Earth Day (April 22) is still observed by many. The new view of the earth encouraged people to respect nature and understand our dependency on the resources provided by our natural environment.  In the 1970’s, the discipline of Human Ecologythe study of the interrelationship of people and the environments in which they live–was established in some universities. So while many people’s understanding of the world changed or expanded, others’ did not. They continue to live in a more detached way from the earth around them.

I can only believe that a broader perspective and understanding of our Earth has served to raise important questions and prompt us to seek new knowledge…

An awareness of our interdependence hopefully helps us live on the planet in a responsible manner…

to preserve it for future generations…
