Visions of Spain

Visions of Spain is a new series I began this summer, which are expressions inspired by the amazing country of Spain. Its sights, sounds, art, history, vistas, food, and music…In this piece, The Present Through the Past, one looks through an arch of a Roman Aqueduct and gets a view of the wonderful city of Segovia with the snow-covered mountains in the background.

On this piece I enlarged one of my photos and printed it in black and white in a few different sizes. Sketching the desired size onto interfacing to use as a guide, I used 3 photos as inspirations and to compose the design. Here is a picture as I began to cut and place the pieces of the center scene.

PiecingSegovia

After the center was pieced and some of the details were thread-painted, I began cutting and placing the stones, surrounding the middle.

I experimented and improvised to discover what the materials would do and which fabrics would give shading, depth, and the look I wanted.

After the arch was pieced, it was put in place on the interfacing around the Segovia scene. Additional free-motion thread-painting and  quilting added to the texture and gave the scene more details and dimension. I added a facing to finish the edges and liked the results for this wall-hanging.

In the Studio~”It’s Back to the Drawing Board!”

Post-Thanksgiving has meant renewed time in the studio this week.  Yesterday when turning on my sewing machine, the light on the panel was too dim to read and I almost panicked. On no, the computer’s main board has gone outHow would the cursor and light just quit working with no warning?…Then I discovered a little button on the side of the machine that I never knew existed–after years of sewing! When it was turned, the panel immediately lit up and was visible. Wow, such relief and no more excuses…

Edge Quilting

Finally, back to the quilting of the Lifeweaving wall-hanging. After repining and smoothing the black strips, I am working my way from the middle to sides in each direction. Using a tiny zigzag stitch over the edges is working well to connect the strips and add texture to the design.

I tend to work on several pieces, in different stages of the design process, at the same time. So, another project is the yellow flower design. The inspiration for this art quilt is this photo taken in a garden this summer.

Summer Flower

I love the colors and the pattern on the underside of this yellow bloom…Fabrics are being auditioned for the background, as well as the flower applique to be layered onto it…

AuditioningFabricsAt this point in the design process, colors are considered—Should they be realistic?…abstract? Also, decisions on size and scale must be made—Should I enlarge the pattern?

After a great holiday and much activity, it has been good to rest and focus in the quiet of the studio.

 New goals have been set,

                                  new inspirations have been gathered,

and it’s back to the drawing board…

Thursday In the Studio…”Simple Gifts”

Today I worked on some simple gifts. While normally studio time is spent on designing art quilts to exhibit, it was fun and relaxing to work on a “just for fun” quilting project. I really liked the colors and coffeeshop motifs of these fabric squares and decided to make two wall-hangings using them. These are gifts for two friends with whom I share conversation, fun times, and “coffee breaks”!

Coffeeshop Squares

These pre-printed squares were a find during the local spring Quilt Rally…since my background includes all kinds of sewing and textile techniques, I still love to collect and experiment with all types, colors, and prints of fabrics.

3 of these squares were arranged vertically and pieced together with strips.

Sashing

A longer strip was sewn along each side…

And the top of the first wall-hanging was pieced!

Some free-motion embroidery was added to enhance a few details on each block…

Backing fabric was chosen and the pillowcase method was used for layering and finishing the edges…

Quilting lines were added to give texture and detail…

And a sleeve for hanging was added to the back.

This is the first gift. The second wall-hanging will vary slightly but follow the same method!

Gift Wallhanging

After this I should be “warmed up” to finish the quilting of my art quilt, Lifeweaving …                                                    this change of pace in the studio has given me some simple gifts
